This parrot green Kanchipuram pure silk saree is woven in the shade Tamil households call kili pachai (கிளி பச்சை) – the bright, living green of a parakeet's wing – paired with a deeper leaf green. Against it sits a pink silk blouse with a long border: the green-and-pink contrast South Indian brides have reached for across generations.

The weave is handloom Kai Korvai. In a korvai saree the body and the border are woven from separate yarns and interlocked by hand at the join, rather than run as one continuous weft. It is the slowest way to make a Kanchipuram silk saree, and it is why the colour change at the border is crisp instead of blurred. Across the silk runs a flower and mango design. The mango – manga in Tamil – is among the oldest motifs on wedding silks, worn as a wish for abundance in the home a bride is about to begin.

You may know this weave as a Kanjivaram or Kanjeevaram saree, or simply as Kanchi pattu – the names differ by region and spelling, the silk from Kanchipuram's looms is the same.
