This dual tone Kanchipuram pure silk saree does not hold one colour. Turn it in the light and the body shifts – one shade along the fold, another across it – the iridescent effect a handloom gets by crossing two different coloured silks. Against that moving ground, the pink border stays fixed and frames it.

The border is joined in Kai Korvai: woven from its own yarn and interlocked with the body by hand, which is why the pink meets the body in a clean line. It is edged with floral diamonds. Across the body sit two motifs. One is the betel leaf – vetrilai (வெற்றிலை) – the leaf placed in a guest's hands with areca nut at every Tamil wedding, as welcome and blessing. The other is chakkara poo (சக்கரப் பூ), the "wheel flower", a round, spoked bloom. A saree patterned with vetrilai is, quite literally, dressed for an auspicious occasion.
